'Your' CMP Garand!

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (for more information on the CMP, go here) has two locations. The main offices are housed in the Arcade at the Camp Perry Training Site. It's here that your paperwork is processed and shipping documents are issued. "CMP South" at the Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama is where the action is! It's here that rifles are accepted from the Department of Defense, unpacked, cleaned, inspected, repaired if needed and then repacked for shipment to CMP program participants. In January 1999 your Webmaster volunteered a day of labor at CMP South as was permitted to take pictures of the operation to share with you. Anyone can volunteer time at CMP South. Simply contact Orest Michaels there and arrange it!

I hope you enjoy your vicarious visit to CMP South as much as I did actually being there!

These pallets contain boxes of 100 rifles each
These pallets contain boxes of 100 rifles each. Alas, the Army simply threw 100 rifles in each box without padding or protection. If your rifle has a dinged-up stock, that's why!

Mike, a volunteer from Texas
Mike, a volunteer from Texas, attacks a singularly recalcitrant Lock, Gas Cylinder.
Mack, the CMP's other Armorer, and Mike Mack, the CMP's other Armorer, and Mike seem to have decided to use a bigger hammer!
The 'without wood' box
That rifle may have ended up here, in the "without wood" box, or it may have even been broken down to a bare receiver for the receiver sales program.
Garand helicopter door gun The strangest things show up in those boxes from the DoD. This Garand was believed to have been cut down by a Huey door gunner and used in Viet Nam!
The highest grade CMP Garand is the Collector Grade
The highest grade CMP Garand is the Collector Grade. Here is a rack of them prior to shipment. Of late these Collector Grade rifles have not been showing up in the DoD boxes fast enough to meet the demand for them!
Service Grade Garands are repacked with considerably more care Service Grade Garands are repacked with considerably more care after processing by the armorers and volunteers! Of course, these rifles will only be traveling as far as the shipping department.
The rifles are are carefully packaged for shipment
After the rifles are test fired, they are carefully packaged for shipment to you and other participants, right to your door by FedEx! Where else can you get such service, and with such a small investment?
