From the November 2007 issue of Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement:

Probably the first question any potential FAR-308 Titan buyer is going to ask is, “What makes the Titan any different from any other .308 AR?”  Good question and hopefully by the time this evaluation is finished, the answer will be abundantly clear.  First and foremost, Fulton Armory uses only the best components available, beginning with forged Fulton Armory stripped receivers. The Titan is available either as a rifle with 20- or 22-inch heavy weight barrel or as a carbine with 16- or 18.5-inch medium weight tube.  Barrels are Krieger’s Criterion with four groove 1:10 inch rifling. Fulton Armory recommends the 18.5-inch carbine as the optimum combination of compactness, ballistic performance and weight to accommodate the standard 168-grain match jacketed boattail hollow point round loaded by most manufacturers. Barrels are available in plain stainless or Target Gray. This matte finish reduces glint under tactical conditions and at the same time provides a finish that’s esthetically pleasing. The muzzle end of the barrel is fitted with a Smith Enterprises Vortex flash suppressor as standard with a JP Enterprises Bennie Cooley model tactical muzzle brake as an option. The press fit gas block is a Fulton Armory design that’s essentially part of the barrel. It cannot work loose like pinned gas blocks. In fact, the fit and finish of the Titan is among the very best we have ever encountered in an AR. The finish of upper and lower receivers is a perfect match and there is no “slop” whatsoever between the upper and lower. Our carbine came equipped with the optional flip-up detachable front and rear sights that are clearly intended as backup for whatever optic the Titan owner decides to use. The Titan is intended for use as a precision tactical or perimeter rifle, and it with this mission in mind that we set about equipping our Titan for testing.

Our test Titan came equipped with the standard Fulton Armory designed handguard accessory free-float tube that not only free-floats the barrel along its entire length, but also adds an optional full length top rail for optics and night vision equipment, along with optional shorter side and bottom rails for other accessories. In the case of our Titan, the bottom rail was taken up with another option – the ARMS QD bipod mount and Harris bipod. A rifle like the Titan that’s intended for precision tactical shooting requires a bipod and Fulton Armory accommodates this necessity with its optional “one stop shopping” list of this and other accessories. Our rifle also added the tactical charging handle latch that allows the Titan user to conveniently reach the charging handle when a scope is mounted. The bolt carrier is hard chromed for longevity and ease of maintenance. Since the Titan uses the standard AR direct impingement gas system, fouling is certain to find its way into the bolt carrier, but it doesn’t stick to chrome plated surfaces, so the plating is a real maintenance plus.

The Fulton Armory Titan lower is also first-rate. The standard trigger is a two-stage that breaks like the proverbial “glass rod” snapping at exactly 3.5 pounds, although a Giessele fully adjustable trigger is optionally available. For those who demand the very best for rifle matches, the Giessele trigger is probably the way to go, but for tactical use we believe that the standard trigger will better serve the requirements of the precision tactical marksman. Triggers that break at less than three pounds are too light for tactical use and adjustable triggers are a lawsuit waiting to happen. It’s all too common for amateur gunsmiths to set adjustable triggers so light that they will release the sear almost when they are touched. The other Titan lower receiver components are also first rate. The pistol grip is a SPR unit with thumb rest and is contoured for much better grip than standard AR-type grips. The bolt stop is a heavy duty design that isn’t likely to snap under the increased pressure of the heavy .308 bolt carrier and drive spring. AR10 type rifles that use AR15 bolt stops are notorious for stripping them because they were never intended for use under the adverse conditions to which they are subjected in a .308 rifle.  Our test Titan came with a Command Arms adjustable buttstock. Not only is the stock completely adjustable fore and aft for use with body armor, equipment or between individuals of different sizes, the cheek rest is adjustable for both up and down and fore and aft movement, and can be reversed for left-handed shooters. The rubber butt pad is also adjustable up and down for adapting to shooters of just about any size. We were able to obtain a perfect cheek weld by adjusting the cheekpiece and butt pad a bit in both directions. The Titan literature lists a Magpul stock as an option, but we found the Command Arms unit to be perfectly satisfactory.

Shooting the Titan exceeded our expectations - the rifle ran with total reliability and excellent accuracy. The Titan's accuracy (0.6" average group at 100 yards with Hornady 168-gr TAP) was as good as some bolt action rifles we have tested. The bottom line is that Fulton has built a custom rifle with the best components available at a very reasonable price. If our test carbine was any indication, Fulton Armory has hit a home run with its new FAR-308 Titan.
