CMP M14 sales open January 2027 - What we no Far
Surplus M14s are Coming
For the first time, the Civilian Marksmanship Program is going to sell genuine U.S. military M14 rifles to the public, starting in January 2027. Every rifle is being converted to permanent semi-automatic before it ships.
We’ve been building and servicing M14s for more than 40 years, and since the announcement our phones haven’t stopped. This page answers the questions we hear most: what’s actually happening, how to buy one, and what we can do for your rifle once it shows up.

The news
What the CMP Announced
In late July, the CMP confirmed it will receive most of the government’s remaining M14s. Some rifles will stay in government hands for ceremonial and operational use. The rest, well over 100,000 of them, are headed to the CMP. A few weeks later at Camp Perry, CMP chairman and CEO Jerry O’Keefe sat down for an interview and filled in most of the details people had been arguing about online.
Every one of these rifles was built as a select-fire service rifle, which is a big part of why this took years to happen. Each receiver is being machined, one at a time, into a semi-automatic that can’t be turned back. The CMP worked out that process with its federal partners under current law, and it logs every serial number as rifles move through conversion.
Sales were originally expected sometime between late 2026 and early 2027. Interest turned out to be far bigger than the CMP planned for, so it chose January to build up a real stock of finished rifles before opening orders.
On price, you can forget the $3,000 to $5,000 guesses floating around. The final number isn’t set yet, but O’Keefe said it will come in under $2,000. Buyers will be limited to two rifles a year at first, and the CMP may change that once it sees how demand plays out.

How to buy
Get Your Paperwork Together Now
You’ll buy your rifle directly from the CMP, not from us. The CMP hasn’t posted the M14 ordering steps yet, but its current rifle rules give a pretty clear picture of what you’ll need. If you sort this out before January, you won’t be scrambling when orders open.
1
Join a CMP-affiliated club
You’ll need a copy of a current membership card. A lot of buyers go with the Garand Collectors Association, and the CMP lists every affiliated club on its website.
2
Show you're a U.S. citizen
Every buyer has to provide proof of citizenship, no matter how old they are.
3
Document your marksmanship activity
Fill out the CMP Marksmanship Form to show range time or other qualifying activity. If you’re over 60, you can skip this one.
4
Check your state's laws
You have to be legally able to buy a firearm where you live, and some states add their own rules. New York requires a permit for any semi-auto rifle, and California has separate shipping requirements.
5
Watch for the order window or follow us on social
The CMP will post ordering steps and rifle grades at thecmp.org. Sign up below and we’ll email you as soon as they’re out.
Requirements are summarized from the CMP Purchase Eligibility Requirements. Always check the CMP’s current rules before you order.
